Khalid's Story - Compassion in the Classroom
My name is Khalid Jama Hussein, and I live in Hargeisa, Somaliland. I am a mathematics teacher by profession, and over the years, I have had the privilege of helping many students in my classroom. Teaching mathematics is a great passion of mine, but beyond that, I have always been deeply concerned with the well-being of my students.
One particular aspect that touches my heart deeply is seeing students come to class while they are sick. It pains me to witness them struggling with their health while trying to keep up with their studies. Education is important, but no child should have to endure the hardships of illness while pursuing knowledge.
This concern has driven me to take action whenever I encounter a student who is unwell. I make it a priority to offer assistance in any way I can—whether it's helping them access medical care, supporting them with their studies when they’re unable to attend class, or simply offering encouragement during their difficult times.
Helping these students has brought me immense gratitude. It has opened my eyes to how small gestures of kindness can make a significant difference in someone’s life. I feel fulfilled knowing that I can play a role in easing their burdens, even if only for a moment. Their resilience and determination, even in the face of hardship, inspire me to continue giving and helping those who need it most.
Seeing a student return to class healthy and eager to learn fills my heart with joy and gratitude. It reminds me of the importance of compassion in education and the impact we can have on the lives of young people—not just academically, but holistically. In every challenge I face as a teacher, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and make a meaningful difference in my students' lives.
