100+ Freedom Affirmations to Unleash Your Authentic Self

Your life is your own to live.

Have you ever read about the "elder daughter syndrome"? A brief explanation of it is that as the oldest daughter in a family experiences immense responsibility and expectations from a very young age, it makes her have tendencies to be overachieving, people-pleasing, and struggle with anxiety. Why I am starting this post talking about this is because I relate to it a 100%. I am not only the oldest daughter in my family but also the oldest of 10 cousins. Also, I am Indian, and that makes it a lot more intense.

I am 25 currently and only recently have introduced myself to the idea that my life can actually be my own and that I can choose what I want to even if my parents or society disagree with me. All my life I never thought about something without considering my parents' opinion of it to be the final decision. I have always wanted to fulfill their expectations, choose what they agree with, and even pride myself on doing what they wanted me to do, live my life based to their approval, and consider them for the tiniest of decisions.

Doing what I want to do and choosing what I feel is right was such a foreign concept to me. But, over the last couple of years, I started to notice that my parents were indeed not perfect people and that I had a lot of pent-up frustration inside me because of the way I was letting expectations limit myself. I think the questions asked by my therapist really made me reflect on how I was living my life without respecting my own wishes.

We only get this one life. And 25 years of it have already gone for me without realizing that I do have free will and it is not my job to fulfill expectations, whether they are external or self-inflicted. Making our own choices is such a simple thing to think about, but so often, we let our freedom go. Whether it be because of fears, doubts, coercion, expectations, or ignorance, we can so easily forget that our choices should be up to us and us only.

Only you are living your life, and so only you should decide for yourself. I hope that with these affirmations, you'll be able to explore and embrace this idea further. Freedom is our birthright. But, how free we really are is something to ponder upon. You can find more affirmations like these in our Gratitude app. Here you go:
